Sustainability Initiatives

Green Buildings

In 2007, UMB took the first step toward improving our infrastructure’s sustainability by opening our first “green” banking center in Stapleton, Colo. The branch utilizes a green roof, low-voltage lighting, low-flow water fixtures and drought-tolerant landscaping to decrease its environmental impact. Since then, UMB has added a total of five LEED-certified buildings to its collection..
These include a LEED Silver building in Olathe, Kan. and four more LEED certified buildings located in Arnold, Mo., Collinsville, Ill., Boonville, Mo., and Prairie Village, Kan. This nationally-recognized designation verifies the facility follows sustainable practices throughout construction and continues once it is fully operational. You can find criteria for the design, construction and operation of a LEED-certified building at We plan to pursue environmentally sustainable facilities in the future as part of our long-term commitment to sustainability

Waste Reduction and Recycling

UMB has implemented several successful recycling programs throughout its various regions. These include comingled recycling, battery recycling, ink cartridge recycling and paper recycling programs. With the help of these programs, UMB has recycled 2,855 metric tons of paper waste since 2010.

Green Products and Services

UMB strives to provide environmentally friendly products and services that encourage our customers to live more environmentally conscious lives. In 2007, UMB created the VISA Eco Rewards card to reward members for making eco-friendly purchases. In addition, VISA Eco Rewards cardholders can donate their reward points to our environmental partners.
UMB also offers its customers an array of convenient “green” banking services such as online banking, e-statements and mobile banking.

Carbon Footprint Reduction

UMB is committed to reducing its carbon footprint so that it may have a more positive impact on the environment. Along with waste reduction, recycling, green products and services and green construction, we are also striving to reduce our pollution and greenhouse gas emissions by cutting down on our travel and commute mileage. Since the development of our sustainability initiatives, UMB has reduced 10,537 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions. Since 2010, UMB has reduced 2,267 metric tons of carbon.

Alternative Transportation

UMB is committed to reducing its pollution and emission of greenhouse gases by encouraging the use of alternative transportation for travel and commuting. We offer several incentives for employees to use these alternative modes, participate each year in the Mid America Regional Council’s Green Commute Challenge, and UMB has received an “Honorable Mention” as a Bike Friendly Business by the American League of Bicyclists.

2010 Eco Highlights

Over the past year, UMB has shown its dedication to carrying out sustainable business practices and supporting the environment in many different ways:

Our Progress

In 2007, UMB put its commitment to the environment in writing when our Green Team and executive board created our first sustainability white paper. In this, we divided our long-term plan into four phases. Each of these phases included respective goals and action steps, which we have made a dedicated effort to achieve and exceed.
A few of these goals included implementing company-wide recycling programs, contributing to environmental organizations, obtaining LEED certification for facilities, and offering new green products and services. We are proud to report that we have successfully completed 78% of our established goals and our continued efforts have put us on track for completing the remaining action steps in the upcoming years.
