Expanding your business: Hiring new employeesDate posted: 5/9/17 12:00:00 PM
If you are looking to successfully expand your business, knowing how to grow your operation is critical. Here's a guide for owners who want to bolster their business appropriately:
Know when to hire new employees
Deciding when it's appropriate to hire more employees can be difficult for any business owner. However, it's important to do so when your business is growing. Don't stunt your growth by recognizing these common signs of an increasing need for additional staff:
- Your working days are lengthening.
- The quality of your work is dwindling.
- You're ready to give up control.
The Knowledge Center highlighted these as some of the most tell-tale signs that it's time to add to the workforce. In addition, focus on aspects of logistics and operations as well as growth.
"I figured out my time spent working on sales growth was much more valuable than the unsustainable hours I was spending on customer service and other administrative tasks," said John Kinskey of AccessDirect, according to the Knowledge Center. "In hindsight, I wish I had hired someone sooner so that I could have focused on higher value-added activities. I was penny wise and pound foolish."
Find the right worker
When you are expanding your business, finding the best person to fill a position can be difficult, but it's critical. Business News Daily noted that improving the hiring process is the first step. Focus on asking the right questions during the interview process and make sure you also consider the personality of each candidate. For example, asking an applicant about a professional loss he or she has experienced and how the issue was addressed can expose more about a candidate than asking why he or she is the right person for the job.
"What kind of person you hire depends on [the] culture of the organization and the kind of job," Maynard Brusman, a San Francisco-based psychologist added, according to Business News Daily. "A great person with all kinds of skills may be [a] good fit for one and [a] poor fit for another, simply based on their personality type."
Use social media
Social media can help you hire the right person for the job in several ways. Whether you advertise the role on a platform or check out the profiles of various applicants, using social media can be especially helpful as you expand and add to your payroll. By harnessing the power of social media, you receive a more candid look at the personality of candidates and whether they are the right fit for your business.
However, it's also important that you don't eliminate a candidate based on his or her social media presence, as it may not always be an accurate representation of the person.. Simply use social media as another tool for getting to know your applicants on a deeper level.
Expanding your business is something you should be proud of. However, it can be quite intimidating for any business owner. Tackle each aspect of growing your operation one-by-one, and move forward with this accomplishment.
