Glamping on a budget

Date posted:  6/8/16 09:00:00 AM Glamorous camping

Glamping, or glamorous camping, is a fun and enjoyable way to experience nature with the whole family. However, as the name implies, it can be expensive. According to FOX News Travel, there are many locations that also offer luxury accommodations for this type of experience.

What's more, Today Money noted two adults may find themselves spending as much as $8,500 for only three nights of glamorous camping

Fortunately, for those looking to pump up their standard camping experience, it's possible to do so without spending a substantial amount of money. Follow these tips for planning a more affordable glamping trip:

Find affordable rustic accommodations

In the U.S. there are several low-cost cabins, yurts or tipis available in national parks. Do a little research to find a site that works with your budget. Many times, glampers are paying for the location more than anything, so finding a spot that isn't quite as luxurious will help you save quite a bit of money.

If you have a little more money to spend, consider a two night stay at a rustic resort in the wilderness at The Sequoia High Sierra Camp. With luxurious accommodations and plenty of nature, these glamorous tents are available for $500 a night. Yosemite National Park offers a more affordable glamping experience, staying below $150 each night.

Wherever you decide to go, make sure to ask about special rates. In some instances, camp grounds will offer half-off stays or package rates if you plan to glamp for a certain number of days.

If you aren't interested in spending your time in a tent, consider renting a cabin. If you share the expenses with another family or group of friends, it can bring down the total cost.

Glamp on your own

While a fun location sounds appealing, you can save a great deal of money if you simply glamorize your camping equipment and stay at a regular campsite. Whether that simply means finding a large one with a unique pattern or investing in a tent with plenty of accessories, head to your local outdoor outfitters and find a product that fits your needs and budget.

From there, you can invest in rugs, a mattress, pillows, lighting and seating to make your lodging a little more luxurious. Also bring any kitchen comforts along with you. From wine glasses to a multi-purpose cooler, these accessories will enhance your glamping experience.

Invest in your food and drinks

Whether the whole family will be cuddling up to a toasty fire with chai teas or if the adults will be enjoying a fancy cocktail or two after dinner, the food and drinks provided during your glamping trip can have a profound impact on your experience.

Plan the meals ahead of time to ensure they can easily be prepared while in the wilderness. Find some recipes online and do some of the meal prep before leaving on your trip. This will eliminate some of the stress, while ensuring you and your family can enjoy favorite fancy foods while camping.

Glamorizing the food and drinks you enjoy while glamping must include presentation. Bring pottery or crystal to use for eating and drinking while experiencing the beauties of nature. When the accessories are more formal, it adds a touch of luxury without costing you more money.

If you are concerned about breaking dishes, head to an antique or thrift shop and find vintage tea cups, plates and bowls. Feel free to mix different designs for an eclectic look.

Focus on the sleeping area

The sleeping area is where you will want to spend the most money. Allocate a majority of your budget toward adding more comfortable accessories for the sleeping area.

To enhance your experience, make sure the space you lay your head at night is especially comfortable. Invest in bed linen, throw pillows, a topper, a mattress and a duvet. Also, use string lights or lanterns for a romantic glow. When you have a comfortable sleeping space, it incorporates more luxury into the experience.

Add a cozy area rug or two to this area to add a pop of color to the space. Remember, an important part of glamping is going overboard with accessories and luxury.

Spend some time outdoors

Remember that even though this type of camping is more glamorous, it's still an opportunity to experience nature. Go on a few hikes, stargaze when the sun sets and tell ghost stories around the campfire. These activities make the experience truly memorable, and fortunately, they don't cost anything.

Glamping is a great opportunity to unwind and enjoy the peace and serenity the outdoors can offer. In addition, it allows you to reconnect with your family. Consider making a no-phone rule so you and your loved ones can truly experience the natural environment and one another's company.

Depending on the location where you are glamping, there may be opportunities for additional activities. From whitewater rafting to fly fishing, discover fun activities in your location. These may cost money, so make sure you ask for pricing when you reach out. Incorporate one or two of these activities into your itinerary for a good mix of glamping and adventuring.

Consider glamping at home

If you are working with an especially tight budget, you may want to consider setting up camp right in your back yard. The advantages? Your kitchen and bathroom are conveniently located nearby. While you might not be able to steal away into the wilderness, it's a fun way to affordably enjoy this experience.

Every budget is different. Glamping provides an opportunity for everyone to spend as much or as little as they would like on a fun and interesting getaway. With some creativity, you and your family can enjoy time together in the wilderness.

Budget accordingly for your ultimate glamping experience this summer, and reconnect with your loved ones and with nature.
