Wellness spending: Knowing where to put your money: Part I

Date posted:  4/21/16 09:00:00 AM

Getting in shape and losing weight are goals many individuals strive for. If you are among the many who have decided to become healthier in 2016, knowing what to spend money on to help you reach your goals will be of substantial assistance.

Purchase workout clothes
Fitness Magazine reported that purchasing clothes is a great way to motivate yourself to get up and work out.

"Having the right clothing doesn't just remove a hurdle; it reinforces your identity as an exerciser," said Kelly McGonigal, a health psychologist and a fitness instructor at Stanford University, according to Fitness Magazine. "And when exercising is an integral part of your identity, it isn't optional anymore. It's just part of your life."

Consider investing in a personal trainer
Because motivation is one of the most difficult parts of staying on track, spending money on a trainer who holds you accountable for every workout is incredibly helpful. Plus, since they are fairly expensive, you won't be as tempted to skip sessions throughout the year.

In addition, Money Talks News noted that trainers have the expertise to help you meet your unique goals. They can determine the best exercises, proper form and answer any questions you have about improving your overall fitness.

However, you will also want to make sure you match well with the trainer you select. Find someone you trust and feel like you can develop a strong relationship with.

Create a home gym
During the colder months of the year, it's always more difficult to leave your cozy home, so investing in the materials to make a room in your house your very own home gym will make sticking to your resolution far easier.

One of the first things you will need to do when setting up the space is select an appropriate room. Find a space that doesn't have a use or is very irregularly used. Clear it out to ensure there is enough space to complete your workouts. In addition, you will want to ensure there is plenty of good lighting. If not, you can easily replace the bulbs to properly illuminate the space.

Determine what you want in your workout space. Some individuals prefer a calm area for Pilates or yoga while others want to build muscle and burn fat using cardio machines and free weights. How you want to use the room will determine the d├ęcor as well as the amount of money you will likely need to save for creating the space.

Better Homes and Gardens indicated you will need to first establish your budget before deciding what to invest in. Remember, you don't need to start off with a fully-equipped gym. Start small and build throughout the year to match your determined budget.

Sign up for an event
When you sign up and pay to participate in an event that requires training, you are putting yourself in a better position to succeed. Races do have associated costs, but they can provide you with a commitment that helps you stick to your workout.

Check out local marathons or races, and check for more creative options as well, like those that involve an elaborate obstacle course. Find something you will be excited to participate in, and that you will be motivated to commit to training for. Once your event occurs, sign up for another to continue improving your physical fitness throughout the year.

Health and wellness are an important aspect of your life, so take the time to build good exercising habits to reach a healthier you.
