Tips for planning a romantic and affordable honeymoon

The honeymoon is supposed to be one of the most memorable trips you take in your lifetime. However, with the rising costs of weddings, spending a lot of money on this event is may not be an option for most. While you'll likely want to plan a trip that's fun and exciting, keeping it on budget is also critical.

Follow these tips when planning your romantic and unforgettable getaway:

Start planning as early as possible
Travel Channel published an interview with Tom Marchant, the cofounder of Black Tomato, a luxury travel company, where it asks questions about what to consider when planning a honeymoon. This conversation offered tips and tricks for a great vacation.

One way you can decrease stress and save some money is by planning early. When you start looking for deals earlier, you have more freedom to explore various options and more opportunities to save money on tickets, travel and lodging.

"If you can plan it early, it is one less thing to worry about and also something to look forward to in the middle of wedding planning stresses," said Marchant, according to the Travel Channel.

Be flexible
Sometimes the best option and greatest savings are only possible if you are a little more open-minded. Even if you have imagined a romantic getaway to Hawaii since you were a child, a trip to another destination may be more affordable and will let you get more bang for your buck. Remember the purpose of a honeymoon is to enjoy some time off with the love of your life. The actual destination isn't as important as the person you are traveling with.

"Be open-minded to destinations. Work out what you really want/will make you happy on the trip," added Marchant. "Too many people conform to what they think a honeymoon should be without really thinking what it's going to give them."

Enlist the help of a professional
The Knot suggested hiring a travel agent when planning your honeymoon. By booking all the elements of your vacation together, these professionals can also save you money. Typically, travel agents have the closest access to information about last-minute sales or other promotions that translate to big savings.

In addition, their expertise will ensure your honeymoon goes as smoothly as possible. Communicate what you want out of the honeymoon and your budget.

Ask guests to chip in
If you really want to save on your honeymoon, ask guests to contribute to your vacation expenses instead of purchasing a traditional wedding gift. Many tour operators can provide a registry service that allows you to easily track and collect money contributed to your honeymoon fund.

You can also allow guests to put funds toward specific activities. For example, if you want to go skydiving on your honeymoon, guests can give money specifically for this adventure.

Pack light
According to Brides, one common mistake many people make when heading on a honeymoon is packing far too much. You don't want to spend extra money on checking a bag when you could have gotten away with less luggage. In addition, no one wants to lug around a ton of bags while trying to enjoy a carefree honeymoon.

While it's tempting to bring out the best of your wardrobe when celebrating, try to resist the temptation as much as possible.

Take a little time after the wedding
While it might be tempting to start your honeymoon right after the big ceremony, consider taking a few days to decompress. The last thing you want to do is start your getaway completely exhausted from all the planning and celebrating.

In addition, if you're in a rush you may forget important items or even miss a flight. You want to make sure you have time for mistakes or delays, so try to plan your vacation with this in mind.

Prepare some meals yourself
Eating out at nice restaurants every day of the honeymoon can get expensive very quickly. When you arrive at the hotel or resort, go grocery shopping with your husband or wife and pick out a few items to tide you over for the duration of the trip. Also consider preparing a few meals together. It's a romantic and fun activity you can share while saving some money.

Don't be afraid to let people know
When you are actually on your honeymoon, let others know what you are celebrating. In some instances you may receive  free perks, so it's a great way to share your happiness while also potentially getting a few deals.

Your honeymoon should be a fun, romantic and stress-free adventure. By preparing ahead of time, you can better enjoy your getaway.
